Sundays used to feel heavy.
That weird mix of end-of-week exhaustion and the mental checklist of everything waiting for me on Monday. School lunches. Work meetings. Laundry. Emails. Permission slips. The never-ending cycle.
I used to either ignore it all (hello Sunday Scaries) or try to do a full house overhaul and burn myself out before the week even started.
Now? I do a Sunday Reset – it’s not perfect but it’s enough to start Monday feeling calm and ready.
Here’s what that actually looks like in our very normal, slightly chaotic, working-mum life.
1. The Family Reset
Before I touch laundry or cleaning, I reset the mental load.
I check:
• School events
• After-school activities
• Appointments
• Anything the kids have mentioned that I definitely have forgotten
Everything goes into the diary. If it’s not written down, it doesn’t exist in my brain by Tuesday.
Sometimes we have a quick family chat about the week ahead – who needs sports gear, who has library day, who has something special on. It takes 5 minutes and saves a whole lot of last-minute chaos.
2. The Home Reset (Not a Deep Clean)
This is where I used to go wrong. I thought a reset meant scrubbing everything.
It doesn’t.
Now I focus only on high-traffic areas:
• Kitchen benches cleared
• Dishes dealt with
• Lounge picked up
• Entryway shoes/bags sorted
I usually put one load of washing on as well just to stop it multiplying.
Resetting surfaces makes the house feel calmer instantly. I’ve realised I don’t need a spotless home I just need it to feel reset enough to start again.
3. The Food Reset (Keep It Simple)
I don’t do gourmet meal prep. I do survival prep.
On Sundays I:
• Roughly plan dinners for the week
• Check what we already have
• Prep 1–2 easy lunch options
• Put snacks somewhere visible and grab-and-go
This alone reduces so much weekday stress. I’m not standing in the kitchen at 5:30pm wondering what to cook while everyone is hungry and tired.
Future me is always grateful for Past Sunday Me.
4. The Work Reset
This is the step that helps me switch from weekend mode to work mode without panic.
I:
• Check Monday’s calendar
• Look at the week ahead
• Write my top 3 priorities for Monday
• Pack my work bag if I’m going into the office
When I already know what Monday morning looks like, I don’t wake up with that instant rush of anxiety. I can start the day feeling prepared instead of behind.
5. The Me Reset
This part matters just as much as the rest.
After the house, food, and diary are sorted, I try to reset myself.
Sometimes that looks like:
• A long shower
• Skincare
• Fresh pyjamas
• Sitting with a tea and my journal
• Going to bed a bit earlier
Nothing fancy. No spa day. Just small signals to my brain that the week is starting and I deserve to feel ready for it too.
Why This Works (Even When Life Isn’t Perfect)
My Sunday Reset doesn’t magically make the week smooth. Kids still forget things. Work still gets busy. Laundry still reappears like it has a personal vendetta.
But it does one important thing:
It turns Monday from a shock… into a continuation.
Instead of feeling like I’m already behind, I feel like I gave myself a head start. And as a working mum, that little bit of breathing room makes a huge difference.
If your Sundays feel overwhelming, don’t aim to do everything.
Just pick one or two reset habits and start there.
Calm doesn’t come from perfection it comes from small, repeatable routines that support real life.
And trust me, working-mum life is nothing if not real.
